Case Study: Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust – Dietetics
Malnutrition identification standardised using video training
Health and Care Videos have been working closely with the Dietetics Department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust to enable them to adopt new ways to raise awareness and improve the care of malnutrition in the community.
Why Video?
The Dietetics team saw video as a useful tool to standardise training and help carers and health professionals correctly identify the nutritional needs of the people they care for. To enable them to make this identification, we created seven training videos on using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST). In addition to staff training on MUST, another video was produced for patients and carers that demonstrates making, and the importance of using, fortified milk. Take a look at the full range of videos on the Trust’s website here.
Using video has enabled the team to:
- Raise the profile of malnutrition within the community and reach a wider audience
- Facilitate and provide a consistent approach to training
- Share and reinforce their key message in a quick and simple way
- Use their time more efficiently
- Manage their waiting lists
‘The videos have provided a means of accessible and user-friendly training for a wide range of health and social care staff in different settings, within an Integrated Care Organisation.’ Julie Kemmner, Clinical Community Dietician & Team Lead
How are the videos being used?
Family members, carers, and patients

Staff Training
Due to increased referrals and longer waiting lists, it was no longer sustainable for the dietetics team to deliver face to face training sessions to every care home in their region.
‘The training can be 2 -3 hours long so if you have something that backs up what you’re saying people tend to remember it better and if they have access to it afterwards as well, that reinforces the information you’re giving.’ David Reddaway, Community Dietician
‘We cover nearly 200 care homes and we’re a small team of 3.6 whole time equivalent staff, so it really does help to manage our waiting lists’ Julie Kemmner
